INTRODUCTION
There are many battles to be fought in this world.
As soon as we are born into this world, the battle of life begins.
Job 14:1 says:
“Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.”
Life can present different challenges, and a person's family history, upbringing, environment and circumstances can influence some of the battles they encounter.
This is why the subject of background deserves serious spiritual attention.
When we talk about background, we can be referring to:
- Your heredity.
- Your lineage.
- Your family tree.
- Your place of birth.
- Your upbringing.
- Family patterns.
- Family beliefs and practices.
- Generational habits.
- Past family decisions.
- Spiritual foundations.
But there is good news.
Your background does not have the final authority over your destiny.
God can take a person from a difficult beginning and give that person an extraordinary ending.
Job 8:7 says:
“Though thy beginning was small, yet thy latter end should greatly increase.”
Your beginning may be difficult, but your ending can be glorious.
Your family history may contain battles, but God can make you a new testimony.
Your parents may have experienced limitations, but those limitations do not have to become your permanent boundary.
Your background cannot stop God. And if it cannot stop God, it cannot ultimately stop what God has ordained for your life.
WHAT DOES BACKGROUND MEAN?
Background includes the circumstances and history surrounding your birth and upbringing.
It may include your:
1. Heredity
The characteristics and conditions passed through generations.
2. Lineage
The family line from which you came.
3. Family Tree
The generations that came before you and the patterns associated with them.
4. Family History
The choices, decisions, successes, failures and spiritual practices associated with previous generations.
Your background can influence you, but it does not have to imprison you.
Jesus Christ is greater than your past.
7 FACTS TO NOTE ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND
1. Where You Are Born Is Not Your Choice, But Where You Are Going Can Be Different
You were not given permission to choose your father or mother.
You did not choose your family.
You did not choose your birthplace.
But you can choose to follow God.
You can choose obedience.
You can choose faith.
You can choose prayer.
You can choose to break away from ungodly patterns.
2. God Can Use Your Life to Rewrite Your Family History
If you were born into a difficult family background, that does not mean God has abandoned you.
God may use your life as the beginning of a new chapter.
What your parents could not accomplish, God can enable you to accomplish according to His will.
3. How You Were Born Was Beyond Your Control
You did not choose the circumstances surrounding your birth.
Therefore, do not spend your entire life blaming yourself for the background into which you were born.
Instead, surrender your life to God.
4. God Can Display His Power Through Difficult Beginnings
Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly used people whose beginnings did not appear impressive.
He specializes in turning weakness into testimony.
1 Corinthians 1:27 says:
“But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise…”
5. Your Background Is Not a Barrier to God's Power
Your background may explain where you started.
It does not have to determine where you finish.
You can be born in a manger and become a manager.
You can start with nothing and, by God's grace, become a testimony.
6. Your Background Should Not Keep Your Back on the Ground Forever
You must rise.
You must pray.
You must seek God.
You must refuse to accept defeat as your permanent identity.
Micah 7:8 says:
“Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise…”
7. Your Background Cannot Stop God
God is greater than every limitation.
God is greater than every family pattern.
God is greater than every ancestral battle.
God is greater than every evil covenant.
God is greater than every negative history.
Jeremiah 32:27 says:
“Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?”
BIBLICAL EXAMPLES OF PEOPLE WHOSE BACKGROUND DID NOT STOP THEM
1. Abraham — Joshua 24:2–3
Abraham came from a family background associated with the worship of other gods.
Yet God called Abraham and established a covenant with him.
His beginning did not determine his ending.
2. Gideon — Judges 6:12, 15
Gideon described his family as the weakest in Manasseh and himself as the least in his father's house.
Yet God called him:
“Thou mighty man of valour.”
His background did not cancel God's calling.
3. Jesus Christ — John 1:46
Nathaniel asked:
“Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth?”
Nazareth was not regarded as an impressive place.
Yet Jesus Christ came from there.
The place people despised could not stop God's purpose.
SIGNS OF A TROUBLED BACKGROUND
The following experiences may cause a person to examine their life, family patterns and spiritual foundation:
- Untimely death occurring repeatedly in a family.
- Profitless hard work.
- Aimlessness and difficulty living a purposeful life.
- Persistent health problems requiring appropriate medical attention and prayer.
- Unexplainable marital distress or repeated destructive relationship patterns.
- General backwardness and stagnation.
- Persistent difficulty in spiritual growth.
- Difficulty maintaining consistency in fasting, prayer and Bible study.
- Constant failure at the edge of breakthrough.
- Collective family captivity and repeated negative patterns.
- Being rejected or opposed without understanding the reason.
- Difficulty sustaining blessings and progress.
These experiences should not automatically be treated as proof of a spiritual attack. Some may have practical, emotional, relational or medical causes.
But wherever there is a persistent pattern that concerns you, bring it before God in prayer and ask for wisdom, healing and deliverance.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU DO NOT WANT YOUR BACKGROUND TO STOP YOU
1. Surrender Your Life to Jesus
Salvation is the beginning of transformation.
2 Corinthians 5:17 says:
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature…”
2. Repent From Every Sin
Do not protect the sins that are destroying your future.
Ask God for genuine repentance.
3. Get Into the Presence of God
Develop a consistent prayer and worship life.
4. Ask God for Grace
Ask for the grace to change.
Not grace to continue in sin, but grace to become everything God wants you to become.
5. Humble Yourself Before God
James 4:10 says:
“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.”
6. Obey God's Instructions
Prayer should be accompanied by obedience.
7. Aggressively Pray for a Change
There are battles that require persistent prayer.
Luke 18:1 teaches believers to pray continually and not lose heart.
PREPARING FOR THE WARFARE PRAYERS
Before beginning these prayers:
A. Thank God
Thank God for your life and for what He is going to do through these prayers.
B. Confess Your Sins
Confess your known and unknown sins and ask God for mercy.
Where appropriate, acknowledge the sins and ungodly practices of previous generations without assuming that you personally bear guilt for every action committed by an ancestor.
C. Praise and Worship
Spend quality time praising and worshipping God.
D. Read the Scriptures
Meditate on Scriptures concerning salvation, deliverance, restoration and God's power.
E. Pray With Faith
Do not pray from fear.
Pray believing that God is able to transform your story.

- You demon of my father's house that attached itself to my life, leave me alone, in the name of Jesus.
- Any evil foundation raised for my life, be destroyed, in the name of Jesus.
- Evil foundation laid by my ancestors that is affecting my rising, break by fire, in the name of Jesus.
- Every evil foundation speaking against my rising, be uprooted, in the name of Jesus.
- You power that tied my life to my father's house, release me now by fire, in Jesus' name.
- I decree: what stopped my father and mother in life will not stop me. Where they stopped, I will not stop there, in Jesus' name.
- Blood of Jesus, set me free from every evil foundation, in the name of Jesus.
- Every evil covenant attached to my foundation that is affecting every area of my life, break by the blood of Jesus, in the name of Jesus.
- Lord, every inherited bondage that has been moving from generation to generation in my family, Lord, I refuse to inherit it, in the name of Jesus.
- Every demonic sacrifice made by ancestral fathers that is working against me, O Lord, as I pray today, let every evil sacrifice lose its power, in the name of Jesus.
SESSION TWO: BREAKING ANCESTRAL COVENANTS AND BONDAGE
- Every promise made by my parents on my behalf to any dark power, be broken, in the name of Jesus.
- Every family curse, I revoke you, in the name of Jesus.
- Every foundational bondage in my life, break, in the name of Jesus.
- Every darkness planted in my foundation, scatter, in the name of Jesus.
- Every serpent in my foundation, lose your power and be destroyed, in the name of Jesus.
- Every foundational familiar spirit, I bind you and cast you out, in the name of Jesus.

- Every bitter water flowing in my family from any idol, dry up, in the name of Jesus.

SESSION FOUR: RECOVERING DESTINY AND BREAKING STAGNATION
- Problems assigned to my life by wicked elders, die by fire, in the name of Jesus.

- Every evil rope that is tying me to the idol of my father's house, break, in the name of Jesus.
- I release myself from every bondage present in my family line, in the name of Jesus.

- Idols of my place of birth, I break your chain, in the name of Jesus.

SESSION FIVE: TOTAL FREEDOM AND DESTINY RESTORATION
- Every problem without solution assigned to swallow me, die by fire, in the name of Jesus.
- Every inherited problem attached to my family name that has vowed not to leave me, lose your power and die, in the name of Jesus.
- O Lord, let the pillar of my problem be crumbled, in Jesus' name.
- As I wash my head, I declare by faith that every curse, spell, jinx, trouble, obstacle, misfortune, shame and every evil burden contrary to God's purpose for my life is washed away by the power of Jesus, in Jesus' name.
- Every power assigned to keep me at the level of my ancestors, lose your power now, in the name of Jesus.
- Every ancestral limitation standing between me and my divine destiny, be removed by the power of God, in the name of Jesus.
- Every evil family pattern that says I cannot rise beyond the achievements of my generation, break now, in the name of Jesus.
- Father, let every good thing that has been delayed in my life because of foundational battles be released according to Your perfect will, in the name of Jesus.
- I shall not repeat the negative history of my ancestors; by the grace of God, I shall become a new testimony, in the name of Jesus.
- My background cannot stop me. My past cannot destroy me. My family history cannot cancel God's purpose for my life. I rise above every limitation and step into my divine destiny, in the name of Jesus.

I shall fulfil my divine purpose.

What my parents could not accomplish according to God's will, I shall accomplish by His grace.

Let every person who has been held down rise.
Let every person who has been rejected receive divine acceptance.
Let every person whose destiny has been attacked recover their God-given purpose.
Let their latter end be greater than their beginning.
Let their lives become living testimonies that no background is greater than the power of God.
