Introduction

Household enemies, in the language of spiritual warfare, refers to opposition that comes from within one's close circle, family environment, relationships, or people who have intimate knowledge of one's life.

They may be people from one's immediate or extended family. In some circumstances, the term may also be applied to people who have become very close to a person, such as friends, neighbours, colleagues, or others who know important details about that person's life.

The Bible acknowledges that sometimes opposition can come from those who are close to us.

Matthew 10:36 says:

“And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.”

This does not mean that every family member is an enemy or that believers should accuse relatives without evidence. Rather, it reminds us that opposition can sometimes come from unexpected places, and we must depend on God for wisdom, discernment, protection, and deliverance.

Household opposition can be difficult to recognize because people who are close to us may know our habits, weaknesses, history, family circumstances, plans, and personal struggles.

They may know where we came from, the history of our parents and grandparents, and many details that strangers would never know.

However, our confidence is not in identifying people as enemies. Our confidence is in God, who knows every hidden matter and is able to expose and destroy every evil work.

Psalm 27:1–2 says:

“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?”

Joseph and Household Opposition

Joseph experienced serious opposition from his own brothers.

His brothers became envious because of the dreams God had given him.

Genesis 37:19–20 records their reaction to him:

“Behold, this dreamer cometh. Come now therefore, and let us slay him…”

They eventually sold Joseph into slavery.

Yet Joseph's story did not end in the pit.

Genesis 50:20 says:

“But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good…”

This is an important lesson.

Even when people oppose you, God can turn the situation around and accomplish His purpose.

Household Wickedness and Spiritual Warfare

Many people use the expression “household wickedness” to describe recurring patterns of affliction, failure, limitation, conflict, or oppression that seem to affect families.

Prayer should focus on breaking evil works and destructive patterns rather than accusing specific relatives without evidence.

The Bible says:

Ephesians 6:12:

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers…”

Therefore, spiritual warfare must ultimately be directed against spiritual opposition and evil works, not against innocent human beings.

1. They can be close enemies.

Opposition sometimes comes from people who are very close to us.

2. They can be difficult to identify.

Close relationships can make it difficult to recognize harmful behaviour or motives.

3. Outside opposition can sometimes receive assistance from inside.

A person's private information can be exposed by someone within their circle.

4. Destructive forces seek to steal, kill, and destroy.

John 10:10 says:

“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy…”

But Jesus came that we might have life more abundantly.

5. We often have strong emotional ties with people close to us.

This can make betrayal and opposition particularly painful.

6. People close to us may know sensitive information.

Such information can be misused if the relationship becomes unhealthy or hostile.

7. Some of our fiercest battles can come through familiar environments.

8. Some people can hide harmful intentions behind familiarity.

However, we should allow God to expose what is hidden rather than accusing people without evidence.

9. We may continue to encounter family members even after relationships become difficult.

10. Some people who later oppose us may have helped us in the past.

11. People close to us can have significant influence over our decisions.

12. They may sometimes give wrong or destructive advice.

13. Envy can produce serious conflict.

Joseph's brothers are an example.

14. Covetousness can produce conflict.

Absalom's rebellion against David illustrates the destructive consequences of ambition and rebellion.

15. Discouraging words can weaken a person's confidence.

16. Some people may refuse to recognize the good in others.

17. Jealousy and bitterness can produce cruelty.

18. Betrayal can come from people who are trusted.

Delilah, Judas, and Ahithophel provide biblical examples of betrayal.

WHO ARE THE HOUSEHOLD ENEMIES?

The original teaching identifies several categories of people who may become sources of opposition. These include:

1. People within polygamous or extended family structures who engage in destructive spiritual practices.
2. Wicked or manipulative parents.
3. Wicked grandparents.
4. Wicked siblings, like Cain, who killed Abel, and Joseph's brothers who sold him into slavery.
5. Children who rebel against or deliberately harm their parents, such as Absalom.
6. Wicked cousins or relatives who exploit family relationships.
7. A wicked strongman or dominant figure within a family who seeks personal advantage at the expense of others.
8. Wicked stepmothers or stepfathers.
9. Wicked neighbours, colleagues, or house helps.

However, these categories should not be used to accuse people without evidence. Our prayer is for God to expose every genuine source of evil, break destructive influence, and protect us from every form of wickedness.

21. Through destructive patterns such as slow progress, demotion, rising and falling, and repeated setbacks.
22. Through what spiritual-warfare teaching describes as evil deposits or plantations.

24. Through evil decrees, verdicts, and pronouncements.
25. Through enchantment, divination, sorcery, incantations, and occult practices.

30. Through patterns that appear to consume a person's strength, years, resources, or opportunities.

Ephesians 6:12 reminds us that our struggle is ultimately spiritual.

STEPS TO OVERCOMING HOUSEHOLD WICKEDNESS

1. Make sure you are born again.

Commit your life completely to Jesus Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:17:
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature…”

2. Ask God for revelation and wisdom.

Ask God to expose every genuine source of trouble without causing you to falsely accuse innocent people.

3. Stop revealing every future plan to everyone.

Wisdom requires discretion.

Proverbs 11:13:
“A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.”

4. Ask God to deliver you and fight for you.

Exodus 14:14:
“The LORD shall fight for you…”

5. Destroy every source of spiritual bondage.

Renounce occult practices, ungodly covenants, sinful practices, and every agreement contrary to God's Word.

6. Pray against evil altars and destructive spiritual influences.

Ask God to destroy every work of darkness.

7. Ask God to reverse every evil work.

Isaiah 54:17:

8. Reject every curse and destructive manipulation.

Stand upon the finished work of Christ.

9. Remain spiritually alert.
