INTRODUCTION

One of the greatest disasters in the human race is the power of curses. There are people and powers who love to curse, and their greatest delight is to curse people.

The root of many people's problems is believed to be curses issued against them either in the day, night, in dreams or through inheritance, which have not been broken.

People fast, pray and go to the mountains because of these problems. Curses are serious matters and should not be taken lightly.

The good news is that Jesus Christ has provided redemption from the curse.

Galatians 3:13 says:

“Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us.”

This is why the believer can pray with confidence for freedom, deliverance and restoration through Christ.

WHAT IS A CURSE?

A curse can be understood as:

1. A pronouncement of evil against a person, place or thing.
2. A sentence calling for punishment, injury or destruction against a person, place or thing.
3. Labouring under a closed heaven.
4. An unseen force that appears to mock a person's efforts.

Proverbs 26:2 says that a causeless curse shall not come.

The Bible also shows that God's blessing is greater than every curse.

Numbers 23:20 says:

“Behold, I have received commandment to bless: and he hath blessed; and I cannot reverse it.”

SOURCES OF CURSES

The original teaching identifies several possible sources:

1. God

Scriptures such as Genesis 3:9-16 and Deuteronomy 28:15-45 show biblical examples of consequences connected with disobedience.

2. Man

Examples can be seen in passages such as Genesis 49, Joshua 6:26 and 2 Kings 7:2.

3. Satan and His Agents

The Bible records examples of hostile words and opposition, such as the confrontation between David and Goliath in 1 Samuel 17:42-47.

4. Inheritance and Family Patterns

The Bible contains passages concerning consequences that can affect generations, including Exodus 20:5-6.

5. Evil Objects

Bringing objects associated with occult or idolatrous practices into a home is treated seriously in Scripture.

6. Evil Places or Lands

The Bible contains accounts involving places connected with judgment, idolatry or wickedness.

7. Evil Houses

A person may live in an environment associated with practices that are contrary to God.

8. Broken Covenants

Covenants are treated seriously throughout Scripture. Ecclesiastes 5:4-5 emphasizes the seriousness of vows.

EFFECTS OF UNBROKEN CURSES

The original teaching identifies the following possible manifestations:

6. Chronic physical or mental affliction

Psalm 34:17 says:

FACTS ABOUT CURSES

The original teaching emphasizes these principles:

1. Unless a curse is broken, it is believed to continue operating.
2. A curse is regarded as a spiritual problem requiring spiritual intervention.
3. Where sin remains, repentance and restoration are necessary.
4. Spiritual forces can be associated with curses.
5. A person, place or thing can be subject to a curse.
6. Curses can have continuing effects until they are dealt with.
7. Identifying the particular reason behind a problem can be an important step toward breaking its hold.

Above all, the believer must remember the finished work of Christ.

Colossians 2:14-15 speaks of Christ cancelling the record that stood against us and triumphing over spiritual powers.

CHRIST HAS REDEEMED US

The foundation of Christian deliverance is not fear of curses. It is faith in Jesus Christ.

Galatians 3:13 declares that Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law.

Therefore, when you pray against curses, pray from the position of faith in Christ.

Romans 8:1 says:

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.”
