Key Scriptures

Obadiah 1:17:
“But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.”

Luke 4:18:
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives…”

Psalm 34:17:
“The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.”

Colossians 1:13:
“Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son.”

Introduction

Deliverance is being set free from spiritual bondage and barriers that hold us back. It includes freedom from oppressive spiritual strongholds and the breaking of works of darkness through the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Deliverance is an important aspect of Christian spiritual growth. It is wrong to assume that simply because a person has given his or her life to Jesus Christ and received the Holy Spirit, every possible stronghold, destructive pattern, wound, temptation, or oppressive influence will automatically disappear without prayer, discipleship, obedience, and spiritual growth.

Sometimes deliverance happens individually through the move of the Holy Spirit, while at other times God brings deliverance to His people corporately.

The Bible says:

John 8:36: “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”

When the children of Israel were set free from their slavery in Egypt, it was by God's sovereign intervention. They were brought out of a place of oppression into a place of freedom.

Through Moses, God proclaimed to His people that He was going to set them free, and then He did it.

Exodus 6:6: “Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians…”

Have you ever been given a promise from God?

The Bible says that God's people were so overwhelmed in their hearts by slavery and suffering that they could hardly believe that freedom would ever happen.

Exodus 6:9: “And Moses spake so unto the children of Israel: but they hearkened not unto Moses for anguish of spirit, and for cruel bondage.”

I have been in that dark place, and I am sure many people have experienced similar seasons. Sometimes we become so weighed down by our circumstances that we cannot imagine that things will ever be different.

This was the condition of the Israelites in captivity.

Their oppression was not simply ordinary servitude. Pharaoh and the Egyptians feared the increasing strength and number of the Israelites.

Exodus 1:12: “But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew.”

Sometimes intense opposition can arise when people are threatened by progress, but our ultimate confidence must remain in God rather than in human beings.

The Egyptians oppressed God's people fiercely because they wanted to keep them under slavery. But God had a different plan.

Exodus 14:14: “The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.”

When deliverance is properly ministered, God is glorified and lives are changed.

However, not every difficulty is necessarily caused by a demonic power. Some situations may involve medical conditions, trauma, relationships, finances, personal decisions, or other circumstances that also require appropriate practical or professional help. Prayer and wise action can work together.

James 4:7: “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

For total cleansing from the works of darkness and freedom from spiritual bondage, deliverance ministry can be an important part of a believer's spiritual journey.
