INTRODUCTION
Marriage is important to God.
From the beginning, God established marriage as part of His purpose for mankind.
Genesis 2:18 says:
“It is not good that the man should be alone…”
Marriage is therefore not merely a social arrangement. It is something that God Himself established.
And because marriage is important to God, the enemy seeks to attack godly marriages.
The enemy hates what God establishes and seeks to introduce confusion, delay, wrong relationships, disappointment, division and frustration.
This is why some people find it difficult to marry.
Some repeatedly enter relationships that end in disappointment.
Some experience persistent rejection.
Some attract the wrong people.
Some experience repeated marital delay.
Others eventually marry but discover that there are serious battles affecting their homes.
This is why the foundation must be examined.
Psalm 11:3 asks:
“If the foundations be destroyed, what can they do?”
When the foundation is right, what is built upon it can stand.
When foundational issues are ignored, they can affect other areas of life.
However, there is good news:
Jesus Christ is able to rebuild, restore and establish what has been damaged.
Your background does not have the final word.
Your ancestry does not have the final word.
Your past does not have the final word.
God has the final word.
YOUR FOUNDATION AND YOUR MARRIAGE
When we speak about foundation in the context of marriage, we can be referring to your spiritual life, family history, upbringing, personal choices, beliefs, relationships, character and patterns carried from one generation to another.
The Bible teaches us to take spiritual foundations seriously.
1 Corinthians 3:11 says:
“For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”
This is the most important foundation.
Christ must be the foundation of your life and marriage.
Psalm 127:1 says:
“Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it.”
Therefore, while these warfare prayers deal with foundational battles, the ultimate foundation must remain Jesus Christ.
ANCESTRAL AND FOUNDATIONAL BATTLES
The Bible records situations where the actions of previous generations had consequences for later generations.
Lamentations 5:7 says:
“Our fathers have sinned, and are not; and we have borne their iniquities.”
This is one reason why believers should examine family patterns and bring every ungodly pattern before God.
However, your family history does not mean you are permanently condemned to repeat everything that happened before you.
In Christ, there is redemption.
2 Corinthians 5:17 says:
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature…”
And Galatians 3:13 says:
“Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law…”
Therefore, these prayers should be prayed from a position of faith in Christ—not from fear of your ancestry.
HOW ANCESTRAL BATTLES CAN AFFECT MARRIAGE
Within this deliverance-prayer framework, believers may pray against family patterns such as:
- Marital delay.
- Repeated broken relationships.
- Repeated disappointment.
- Wrong relationships.
- Jilting.
- Persistent rejection.
- Family interference.
- Destructive relationship patterns.
- Repeated marital conflict.
- Fear of marriage.
- Ungodly soul ties.
- Patterns of divorce and separation.
- Sexual immorality affecting relationships.
- Spiritual attacks against marital progress.
The purpose of these prayers is to bring such concerns before God and ask Him to break every pattern that is contrary to His will.
WHEN PARENTS HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN IDOLATRY
If a family has a history of idolatry or occultic practices, this should not be treated lightly.
The Bible repeatedly warns against idolatry and occult practices.
Deuteronomy 18:10–12 warns against various occult practices.
Therefore, if such practices exist in a family history, a believer can repent, renounce ungodly practices and pray for freedom through Christ.
The prayer should not be driven by fear.
1 John 4:4 says:
“Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”
Christ is greater.
MARRIAGE AND SPIRITUAL ATTACKS
The enemy can attack marriage through many avenues.
These may include:
- Confusion.
- Wrong counsel.
- Unforgiveness.
- Pride.
- Sexual immorality.
- Bitterness.
- Family interference.
- Financial pressure.
- Wrong relationships.
- Spiritual attacks.
- Repeated destructive patterns.
The answer is not simply to blame every difficulty on Satan.
We must also examine ourselves.
We must repent where necessary.
We must seek wisdom.
We must communicate properly.
We must forgive.
We must obey God's Word.
And we must pray.
DISTURBING DREAMS AND MARRIAGE
Some believers become concerned when they repeatedly experience disturbing dreams involving:
- Sex in the dream.
- Dirty wedding gowns.
- Marrying strange persons.
- Losing shoes.
- Shaving of hair.
- Going to church on a wedding day and seeing an empty church hall.
- Being in marketplaces wearing torn or dirty garments.
Within a warfare-prayer framework, such dreams may cause a believer to pray for spiritual protection and discernment.
However, not every dream is necessarily a spiritual attack.
Dreams can also be influenced by stress, experiences, fears, thoughts and emotions.
Therefore, do not allow fear to control you.
1 John 4:1 says:
“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God…”
Bring troubling dreams before God and test everything against Scripture.
WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU ARE TRUSTING GOD FOR MARRIAGE
1. Build Your Life on Christ
Jesus must be your foundation.
2. Pray for Divine Direction
Do not allow desperation to choose a spouse for you.
3. Examine Character
Do not look only at appearance, money or social position.
Character matters.
4. Avoid Ungodly Relationships
Do not knowingly remain in relationships that continually pull you away from God.
5. Deal With Your Past
Bring past wounds, unforgiveness, unhealthy attachments and sinful patterns before God.
6. Seek Godly Counsel
Proverbs 11:14 says:
“Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.”
7. Pray Persistently
Luke 18:1 teaches that men ought always to pray and not faint.
PREPARING YOUR HEART BEFORE YOU PRAY
A. Thank God
Thank God for your life and for what He is going to do through this prayer programme.
B. Confess Your Sins
Confess your known and unknown sins and ask God for mercy.
Where appropriate, repent of personal involvement in ungodly practices and renounce them.
C. Praise and Worship
Spend quality time praising and worshipping God.
D. Read the Word
