Isaiah 49:25–26

Jesus also said:

This is a powerful picture of spiritual victory. Whatever has resisted your progress, held you in captivity, or continually opposed God's purposes for your life can be brought under the authority of Jesus Christ.

Introduction

There are seasons when a person makes genuine efforts yet repeatedly encounters the same barriers—stagnation, recurring disappointment, unexplained setbacks, closed doors, repeated losses, destructive patterns or persistent opposition.

The Bible teaches that our ultimate struggle is not against human beings:

Ephesians 6:12 says:

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

In Christian deliverance prayer, the expression “strongman” is often used to describe a spiritual stronghold or persistent power believed to be resisting a person's freedom and progress.

Our confidence, however, is not in the strength of our words. Our confidence is in Jesus Christ, whose victory over the powers of darkness is complete.

Colossians 2:15 declares that Christ “spoiled principalities and powers” and triumphed over them.

Therefore, these prayers are not prayers of fear. They are prayers of faith, authority, surrender and dependence upon God.

What Does the Bible Say About the Strongman?

Jesus used the illustration of a strong man guarding his house in Matthew 12:29. The passage emphasizes that the stronger one can overcome the one who has been guarding the house.

Christ is our victory.

1 John 4:4 says:

“Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”

This means that believers do not have to live permanently under fear, oppression or spiritual intimidation.

Luke 10:19 also reminds believers of the authority Christ gives them over the power of the enemy.

The purpose of these prayers is therefore to seek God's intervention against every spiritual stronghold, destructive pattern, evil assignment and opposition that contradicts His purposes for your life.

Biblical Examples of Victory Over Strong Opposition

David and Goliath

Goliath intimidated Israel for many days, but David confronted him in the name of the Lord.

1 Samuel 17:45 says:

“Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts.”

David's confidence was in God, not in his own strength.

Israel and Pharaoh

Pharaoh resisted Israel's release, but God intervened with mighty signs and brought His people out.

Exodus 14:14 says:

“The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.”

Paul and Spiritual Opposition

Paul encountered intense opposition while carrying out his assignment, yet God's purpose prevailed.

2 Timothy 4:18 says:

“And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom.”

Preparing Your Heart Before You Pray

Before beginning these prayers:

1. Give God thanks for His mercy and faithfulness.
2. Confess known sins and sincerely repent.
3. Forgive those who have offended you.
4. Renounce occult practices, idolatry and every practice contrary to God's Word.
5. Read the Scriptures aloud.
6. Praise and worship God.
7. Pray with faith rather than fear.
8. Refuse hatred and personal vengeance against people.
9. Ask God for wisdom concerning practical issues in your life.
10. Where persistent physical or psychological symptoms exist, seek appropriate professional care alongside prayer.
