INTRODUCTION

There are times when a person wants to move forward but seems to be tied down by invisible limitations.

There are times when opportunities appear but disappear.

There are times when a person works hard but continually experiences stagnation, delay, frustration, repeated failure, disappointment, or unusual opposition.

There are also situations where a person feels trapped in a cycle that seems difficult to explain.

The Bible gives us powerful examples of people who experienced captivity and supernatural deliverance.

Peter was imprisoned and chained, but God sent an angel, the chains fell from his hands, and the prison doors opened.

Paul and Silas were imprisoned and placed in chains, but at midnight they prayed and praised God. Suddenly, there was a great earthquake, the foundations of the prison were shaken, the doors opened, and their bands were loosed.

Samson was bound with cords, but when the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, the cords became like flax burned with fire.

The woman in Luke 13 had been bound for eighteen years, but Jesus declared that she ought to be loosed.

These accounts reveal something powerful:

God is a chain breaker.

He is able to break visible and invisible chains.

He is able to release people from captivity.

He is able to destroy satanic yokes.

He is able to restore lost years.

He is able to bring a person out of a prison that human strength cannot break.

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me... he hath sent me... to preach deliverance to the captives.” — Luke 4:18

Today, we are calling upon the God who breaks chains.

O GOD, ARISE AND BREAK MY CHAINS, IN THE NAME OF JESUS!

WHO IS THIS GOD WHO BREAKS EVIL CHAINS?

God is the mighty Deliverer.

He is in the business of breaking both spiritual and physical chains.

Luke 4:18 declares that He came to proclaim liberty to the captives.

Isaiah 61:1 says:

“He hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound.”

In the Bible, God broke the chains of several people.

This included the woman who had been bound by the enemy for eighteen years.

“And ought not this woman... whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond?” — Luke 13:16

Peter was put in prison and was facing death, but God intervened.

“And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him... and his chains fell off from his hands.” — Acts 12:7

Paul and Silas were locked in prison and put in chains. At midnight, they prayed and praised God.

Then God intervened.

“And immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed.” — Acts 16:26

Somebody give the Lord a praise offering!

It is indeed a privilege to serve this God.

This God is our God, and we will never stop serving Him.

We see, therefore, that God:

1. He is the bondage breaker. — Luke 4:18.
2. He is the yoke breaker. — Luke 4:18.
3. His presence brings deliverance. — Judges 15:14; Acts 12:7.
4. He breaks chains of captivity. — Luke 13:11–16; Acts 12:1–11.
5. He stops the oppression of the enemy and brings restoration. — Acts 10:38; John 10:10.
6. He is the Great Physician. — Acts 10:38.

Psalm 107:14 says:

“He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder.”

Therefore, no matter how long the chain has existed, God is still able to break it.

WHAT ARE CHAINS OF DARKNESS?

Chains are ropes or cords used to bind a person or a thing.

Samson was bound with cords in Judges 15:13–14, but the power of God broke those bonds.

In spiritual warfare, chains can represent captivity, oppression, limitation, bondage, restriction, or anything that keeps a person from moving forward into what God has ordained.

Chains of darkness may be understood as:

1. Weapons of darkness. — Isaiah 54:17.
2. Weapons of the enemy used to tie a person to bondage.
3. Weapons of destruction. — Judges 15:14; Psalm 107:20.
4. Instruments of wickedness. — Psalm 129:4.
5. Instruments of oppression.
6. Symbols of captivity. — Jeremiah 52:11.
7. Instruments of limitation.
8. Fetters used to bind a person or thing. — Mark 5:4.
9. Evil ropes.
10. Cords of darkness.
11. Spiritual restrictions that keep a person from advancing.

Psalm 149:8 speaks of binding kings with chains and nobles with fetters of iron.

The believer therefore does not have to surrender to the bondage of darkness.

Jesus Christ has authority over every power of darkness.

“For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.” — 1 John 3:8

WHAT ARE EVIL CHAINS USED FOR?

Evil chains are used by the enemy in many ways to create captivity, restriction, oppression, and limitation.

They may be used:

1. To detain a person against their will.
2. To pin a person down.
3. To keep people in bondage. — Luke 8:29.
4. To make a person unavailable for what God has prepared.
5. To put a person in bonds or captivity. — Lamentations 3:7.
6. To bind a person to one spot.
7. To restrict movement and progress.
8. To symbolize the tying up of one's hands, feet, strength, or productivity.
9. To create a sense of captivity and helplessness.
10. To limit a person from reaching the height God has ordained.
11. To produce prolonged affliction and confinement.
12. To create captivity.
13. To afflict a person.
14. To silence a person.
15. To keep a person in a dry or unfruitful place.
16. To prevent a person from fulfilling legitimate goals.
17. To hinder a person from doing what God wants them to do.

But hear the Word of the Lord:

“If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” — John 8:36

WHAT IS THE AGENDA OF EVIL CHAINS?

Evil chains have an agenda of limitation and captivity.

1. To kill, steal, and destroy

“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.” — John 10:10

2. To suppress.

3. To oppress.

Prayer: O God, arise and break my chains, in the name of Jesus.

4. To enforce captivity and slavery

— Acts 12:6–7; 2 Kings 23:33.

5. To keep problems in place.

6. To bring dryness into a person's life.

“God setteth the solitary in families: he bringeth out those which are bound with chains.” — Psalm 68:6

7. To limit progress

A person who is chained cannot move beyond the radius of the chain.

Prayer: Every power from my foundation limiting my life and marital destiny, perish by fire, in the name of Jesus.

8. To keep evil covenants and curses in place.

9. To arrest destiny and progress.

When a person is continually restrained, they may struggle to reach opportunities, relationships, employment, business opportunities, helpers, or other legitimate goals.

Prayer: All demonic chains preventing me from advancing in life, break now, in the name of Jesus.

10. To be used by evil authorities to regulate a person's life.

Prayer: Every evil authority claiming ownership of my life, die by fire, in the name of Jesus.

11. To provide access points for evil influences.

12. To keep problems in place.

13. To monitor progress.

14. To push a person backward.

15. To create yokes of bondage.

16. To expose a person to repeated attacks and oppression.

17. To waste lives and destinies.

The woman in Luke 13:16 had eighteen years of bondage.

18. To divert a person's life from legitimate purpose.

19. To prevent potentials from being fulfilled.

20. To cause a person to remain undiscovered and unfulfilled.

21. To prevent a person from fulfilling God's purpose.

22. To prevent legitimate blessings from manifesting.

23. To stagnate a person's life.

24. To attack the fruitfulness of good things.

Prayer: The good things God has planted within me shall not be aborted by any evil power, in the name of Jesus.

25. To enforce evil verdicts.

Every evil verdict contrary to God's Word must bow to the authority of Jesus Christ.

WHAT KEEPS EVIL CHAINS IN PLACE?

There are various spiritual issues that people identify in deliverance ministry as contributing to bondage and oppression.

1. Curses and Incantations

Balaam was hired to pronounce evil against Israel, but God turned the intended curse into a blessing.

“Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel.” — Numbers 23:23

Prayer: Every power offering evil petitions against me, die now, in the name of Jesus.

2. Unbroken Covenants

These may include evil dedications, ungodly covenants, and inherited patterns of bondage.

Christ is greater than every evil covenant.

“And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament...” — Hebrews 9:15

3. Enchantments, Hexes, Jinxes, and Divination

The Bible repeatedly warns against occult practices and divination.

“There is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel.” — Numbers 23:23

Prayer: Every strange power, strange mirror, and strange object being used against me, shatter and lose your power, in the name of Jesus.

4. Faulty Foundations

Foundational issues can become recurring patterns in families and individuals.

The answer is not fear but bringing every bondage before Christ.

“If the foundation be destroyed, what can the righteous do?” — Psalm 11:3

Pray against every foundational power seeking to delay your blessings, career, calling, business, marriage, progress, and divine purpose.

5. Evil Summons

Some people describe spiritual oppression in terms of evil summons, judgments, and pronouncements.

Every judgment contrary to God's purpose must be brought before the authority of Jesus Christ.

Prayer: Every evil judgment and pronouncement made against my life, be revoked by the blood of Jesus, in the name of Jesus.

6. Witchcraft Powers

Scripture warns against witchcraft and occult practices.

“Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.” — Exodus 22:18

Every power of darkness must bow before the Lord Jesus Christ.

7. Strongmen

Jesus spoke about binding the strong man:

“When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him...” — Luke 11:21–22

Christ is the stronger One.

8. Wicked Powers

Wickedness may manifest through opposition, persecution, evil plots, and attacks.

“No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper.” — Isaiah 54:17

9. Evil Yokes

Evil yokes are associated with bondage, oppression, delay, rejection, and limitation.

“The yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.” — Isaiah 10:27

10. Evil Consumption

The original teaching identifies evil consumption as one of the ways people may understand spiritual bondage.

Rather than physically forcing yourself to vomit, bring every concern about food, dreams, or spiritual oppression before God in prayer and seek appropriate help where necessary.

Prayer: Everything I have consumed that has become a source of bondage or affliction in my life, lose your power and be uprooted by the power of God, in the name of Jesus.

SYMPTOMS OF A CHAINED LIFE

Some commonly identified patterns of a life that feels bound or restricted include:

1. Stagnancy.
2. Failure, frustration, and backwardness. — Acts 12:6–7; Judges 15:14.
3. A repeated feeling of wasted potential.
4. Circular problems.
5. Rising and falling.
6. Hatred, rejection, and disappointments.
7. Failure at the edge of success.
8. Unexplained or persistent difficulties.
9. Sluggishness and repeated delay.

Prayer: I shall reach my God-ordained destination at the appointed time, in the name of Jesus.

These experiences do not automatically prove demonic activity, but they are reasons to pray, seek God, examine one's life, and pursue wise spiritual and practical help.

HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH EVIL CHAINS?

1. Get saved and know God.

You need the power of God to overcome spiritual bondage.

2. Repent of known sins.

“He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.” — Psalm 107:20

3. Seek the fullness of the Holy Spirit.

“And ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you.” — Acts 1:8

4. Submit completely to God.

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” — James 4:7

5. Resist the devil.

Do not cooperate with the works of darkness.

6. Walk in obedience.

“And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.” — 2 Corinthians 10:6

7. Use your spiritual weapons.

Prayer, fasting, Scripture, worship, faith, and obedience are powerful weapons of spiritual warfare.

“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds.” — 2 Corinthians 10:4

PREPARING YOUR HEART BEFORE YOU PRAY

Before beginning these prayers:

• Surrender yourself completely to Jesus Christ.
• Confess known sins and ask God for mercy.
• Forgive those you need to forgive.
