Introduction
Prosperity is more than simply having money.
Biblically understood, prosperity can involve fruitful labour, provision, health, peace, wisdom, spiritual growth, successful stewardship, meaningful relationships and the ability to become a blessing to others.
Ephesians 4:28 connects productive work with the ability to have something to share with people in need.
God is not glorified by poverty, greed or materialism. Neither does the Bible teach that every faithful Christian will become wealthy. Scripture instead teaches us to trust God for provision, work diligently, handle resources wisely, give generously, care for our families and use whatever God gives us for His glory.
Philippians 4:19 says:
“But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”
The question is therefore not merely, “How can I get money?”
The greater question is:
“How can I prosper in a way that honours God and makes me a blessing?”
Why You Must Prosper
1. God Wants You to Flourish
God is the source of every good and perfect gift.
Genesis 17:1–2 records God's covenant blessing to Abraham.
God's desire is not for His children to remain permanently barren, fruitless or unproductive.
2. Prosperity Can Help Fulfil God's Purposes
Deuteronomy 8:18 teaches that God gives the power to produce wealth.
Resources can become instruments for kingdom purposes when they are handled correctly.
3. Prosperity Enables Generosity
Paul taught believers to work so they could have something to share with others.
Ephesians 4:28 says:
“...that he may have to give to him that needeth.”
Prosperity should therefore produce generosity, not selfishness.
4. Prosperity Can Help You Resist Financial Bondage
Financial stability can reduce dependence upon unhealthy or destructive sources of provision.
However, Christians must never put their trust in money.
1 Timothy 6:17 warns believers not to trust in uncertain riches but in God.
5. Prosperity Enables You to Help the Poor
Proverbs 19:17 says:
“He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD.”
God can bless a person's work so that the person can become a blessing to others.
6. Prosperity Can Honour God
Proverbs 3:9–10 teaches believers to honour the Lord with their substance.
The issue is not merely how much you possess but what you do with what God puts into your hands.
7. Prosperity Can Provide for Your Family
Proverbs 13:22 speaks about an inheritance being left for children's children.
Providing responsibly for one's family is part of Christian stewardship.
1 Timothy 5:8 also emphasizes the responsibility of caring for one's household.
8. Prosperity Can Demonstrate Love Through Generosity
Paul taught believers to demonstrate the sincerity of their love through generosity.
2 Corinthians 8:8 says:
“I speak not by commandment, but by occasion of the forwardness of others, and to prove the sincerity of your love.”
9. Prosperity Can Create Influence for Good
Deuteronomy 28:11–13 describes God's blessing in terms of fruitfulness, productivity and influence.
Influence should never become an excuse for pride.
It should become an opportunity to serve.
10. God Takes Pleasure in the Prosperity of His Servant
Psalm 35:27 says:
“Let the LORD be magnified, which hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servant.”
This encourages believers to understand that God's provision is not something they should be ashamed to ask Him for.
11. Wisdom and Provision Preserve Life
Ecclesiastes 7:12 says:
“For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence.”
Money has practical value, but wisdom is essential in managing it.
Therefore, pray not only for financial increase but also for wisdom to handle increase.
How Can You Prosper?
1. Be Born Again
True prosperity begins with reconciliation with God.
John 3:3 teaches the necessity of being born again.
2. Study the Word of God
Joshua 1:8 connects meditation on God's Word with careful obedience and fruitful living.
3. Reject the Mindset of Permanent Defeat
Do not build your identity around poverty, failure or limitation.
Renew your mind with God's Word.
Romans 12:2
4. Pray for Revelation
Ask God for wisdom concerning your purpose, work, business, career and finances.
James 1:5 says God gives wisdom generously.
5. Pray for Breakthrough and Open Doors
Ask God to open opportunities that align with His purpose for your life.
Revelation 3:8 speaks of God setting an open door before His people.
6. Pray for Wisdom to Manage Prosperity
An increase without wisdom can become a problem.
Ask God for discipline, financial wisdom, humility and good stewardship.
