INTRODUCTION
A foundation determines what is built upon it.
In the natural world, a building may look beautiful above the ground while problems beneath the surface gradually weaken it. In the same way, many believers use the language of evil foundations when praying about destructive patterns, ungodly practices, inherited bondage, family history, harmful agreements and recurring problems that appear to follow a family or individual.
The purpose of these prayers is not to make you afraid of your ancestry.
It is not to make you blame your parents.
It is not to make you accuse relatives of causing every difficulty in your life.
The focus is on bringing every area of life under the authority of Jesus Christ.
Whatever has happened in the past does not have to determine your future.
Whatever was built before you encountered Christ can be surrendered to God.
Whatever pattern is contrary to God's will can be confronted in prayer.
Whatever needs repentance can be repented of.
Whatever needs practical correction can be corrected.
And whatever belongs to God can be rebuilt upon the foundation of Christ.
Jesus Christ is the foundation upon which the believer's life must ultimately stand.
WHAT ARE EVIL FOUNDATIONS?
The phrase evil foundation is commonly used in Christian deliverance prayer to describe a destructive spiritual or family history that may be associated with things such as:
- Idolatry
- Occult practices
- Ungodly family traditions
- Destructive inherited patterns
- Harmful agreements or practices
- Persistent cycles of sin
- Family patterns of violence or destruction
- Repeated bondage and oppression
- Patterns of failure or stagnation
- Other influences that are contrary to God's Word
Not every family difficulty is automatically a spiritual curse.
Some problems have medical, psychological, financial, relational, educational or other practical causes.
Therefore, spiritual warfare should never replace wisdom, responsible action, medical care, counselling, education, financial planning or other appropriate help.
But believers can still bring their family history, present struggles and future into the presence of God.
The prayer is:
“Lord, whatever in my life is contrary to Your will, uproot it, cleanse me from it and establish me upon Christ.”
EVIL FOUNDATIONS AND THE NEW LIFE IN CHRIST
The Christian's ultimate foundation is not ancestry.
It is Christ.
Paul writes:
“For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”
1 Corinthians 3:11
This means that a believer should not live permanently under the identity of a troubled family history.
Christ gives a new identity.
Christ gives a new beginning.
Christ gives a new foundation.
Galatians 3:13 teaches that Christ redeemed believers from the curse of the law.
Second Corinthians 5:17 declares that anyone who is in Christ is a new creation.
Therefore, these prayers should be prayed from faith in Christ, not from fear of ancestral history.
BIBLICAL EXAMPLES
1. Abraham's Family
Abraham came from a background in which his family had served other gods.
Yet God called Abraham and established a new covenant relationship with him.
Joshua 24:2–3
God was able to begin something new through Abraham.
2. Gideon's Family
Gideon's father had an altar dedicated to Baal.
God instructed Gideon to tear down the altar and build an altar to the Lord.
Judges 6:25–26
Gideon's family environment did not prevent God from raising him for a divine assignment.
3. Josiah
Josiah inherited a kingdom with a history of idolatry and rebellion.
Yet he led a major spiritual reform and removed many practices that dishonoured God.
2 Kings 22–23
4. Manasseh
Manasseh committed terrible sins, but later humbled himself before God.
2 Chronicles 33:10–16
His story demonstrates that repentance and God's mercy can radically change a person's spiritual direction.
5. Ruth
Ruth came from Moab, yet she became part of God's redemptive story and entered the family line through which Christ came.

Your background does not have the final word over God's purpose.

Build deliberately upon the new foundation God has given you.
- Continue studying the Word of God.
- Maintain a consistent prayer life.
- Remove ungodly practices from your life.
- Do not return to occult practices or destructive traditions.
- Forgive where forgiveness is required.
- Seek appropriate medical or professional help when necessary.
- Correct destructive financial, relational or behavioural patterns.
- Teach your children God's Word.
- Build your household around prayer, truth and obedience.
- Give thanks to God for every evidence of transformation.
The goal is not merely to break something.
The goal is to establish something better.
A life built upon Christ.
