Introduction

Being hurt by someone you trusted can leave deep emotional wounds. Whether it is betrayal, rejection, false accusations, broken promises, or harsh words, the pain can linger for years if it is not dealt with God's way.

Forgiveness is one of the hardest commands in Scripture, but it is also one of the most liberating. When we refuse to forgive, we often remain imprisoned by bitterness, anger, and resentment. However, when we choose forgiveness, we experience God's peace, healing, and freedom.

Jesus Himself set the perfect example. Even while hanging on the cross, He prayed:

"Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do."

— Luke 23:34 (KJV)

Forgiveness does not mean pretending the hurt never happened, nor does it always mean immediate reconciliation. It means releasing the offense to God and trusting Him to bring justice and healing.

Why Is Forgiveness So Important?

God calls every believer to forgive because we have first been forgiven through Jesus Christ.

Forgiveness:

  • Brings peace to your heart.
  • Frees you from bitterness.
  • Strengthens your relationship with God.
  • Promotes emotional and spiritual healing.
  • Reflects the love and character of Christ.

Five Biblical Steps to Forgive Those Who Hurt You

1. Be Honest With God

Tell God exactly how you feel. He already knows your pain and cares deeply about your healing.

2. Remember How Much God Has Forgiven You

Reflect on God's mercy toward you. His forgiveness becomes the motivation to forgive others.

3. Choose Forgiveness

Forgiveness is first a decision of obedience before it becomes a feeling. Decide to release the offender into God's hands.

4. Pray for the Person Who Hurt You

Jesus taught us to pray for those who mistreat us. Prayer softens our hearts and allows God to work in both lives.

5. Trust God With Justice

You do not need to seek revenge. God is the righteous Judge who knows every situation and will deal with it perfectly.

Conclusion

Forgiveness is a journey, and sometimes it must be renewed when painful memories return. Do not become discouraged if healing takes time. Continue to rely on God's grace, and He will strengthen your heart.

Choosing to forgive does not make you weak—it makes you free. As you release every offense to the Lord, He replaces bitterness with peace, anger with love, and pain with hope.

May the Holy Spirit help you forgive as Christ has forgiven you and fill your heart with lasting joy and freedom.
