Introduction

There are seasons when a person becomes tired of where they are.

You have prayed.

You have fasted.

You have cried.

You have trusted God.

Yet the same problem appears to return again and again.

Some people are dealing with prolonged unemployment, loneliness, stagnation, fruitless labour, marital difficulties, financial hardship, family battles, recurring troubling dreams, disappointment and other difficult circumstances.

At such times, it is natural to cry to God for intervention.

The Bible shows that God's people sometimes faced opposition that appeared stronger than they were. Yet God intervened on their behalf.

Exodus 14:14 says:

“The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.”

When this prayer topic says “My Enemies Must Die,” the focus of Christian spiritual warfare should be understood as the destruction of the works, powers, strongholds, evil agendas and spiritual opposition resisting God's purpose.

The Bible says:

1 John 3:8:

“For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.”

Therefore, our prayer is not a call to physically harm people. We are asking God to destroy every evil work and opposition standing against His purpose for our lives.

Biblical Examples of Opposition Being Removed

Herod and the Birth of Jesus

Matthew 2 records the opposition surrounding the birth of Jesus. Herod eventually died, but the larger biblical point is that God's purpose could not be stopped.

Matthew 2:19–20 records that Herod died and God's purposes continued.

Haman and Mordecai

Haman plotted against God's people, but his evil plan was overturned.

Esther 7:10 records the judgment that came upon Haman.

The lesson is that God can overturn the plans of those who oppose His people.

Pharaoh and Israel

Israel was trapped between Pharaoh's army and the Red Sea, but God made a way.

Exodus 14:28 records the destruction of Pharaoh's pursuing army.

Israel's deliverance came through God's intervention.

Goliath and David

Goliath stood as a major obstacle before Israel, but God gave David victory.

1 Samuel 17:47 says:

“The battle is the LORD'S.”

The lesson is not that believers should physically attack their enemies. It is that no opposition is greater than the power of God.

Who Is an Enemy?

From a spiritual-warfare perspective, an enemy may refer to any force or influence working against God's purposes.

This can include:

1. Powers producing repeated disappointment and failure.
2. Forces resisting healthy relationships and family stability.
3. Opposition against legitimate employment and productive work.
4. Forces promoting poverty, lack or fruitless labour.
5. Powers seeking to frustrate God-given purpose.
6. Strongholds producing repeated cycles of defeat.
7. Forces wasting time and opportunities.
8. Spiritual opposition against individuals and families.
9. Forces promoting prolonged delay and stagnation.
10. Opposition that causes beneficial relationships to break down.
11. Recurring fear and troubling dreams.
12. Evil pronouncements and ungodly words.
13. Spiritual oppression and temptation.
14. Strongholds resisting testimony and progress.
15. Any evil agenda seeking to frustrate a person's God-given purpose.

---

You Do Not Need to Live in Fear

The existence of opposition does not mean that opposition will win.

Jesus said:

Luke 10:19:

“Behold, I give unto you power... over all the power of the enemy.”

The believer's confidence is therefore not in human strength.

Our confidence is in Christ.

Romans 8:37 says:

“Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.”
