INTRODUCTION: YOU AND YOUR FOUNDATION

To be great and succeed in life, there are battles you must fight and hurdles you must cross. One of these battles is the battle concerning your foundation.

It is very important for every child of God to understand the importance of foundations. Without this understanding, a person may struggle to recognize and confront recurring problems, destructive family patterns, and spiritual challenges that seem to resist progress.

The Bible declares in Psalm 11:3, “If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?” This scripture reveals the importance of a sound foundation. A faulty foundation can affect the stability of a building, and in the same way, unresolved problems from one's background can create challenges that require prayer, repentance, wisdom, and decisive action.

Foundations are the starting points upon which things are built. In spiritual warfare, believers pray against every evil altar, ungodly covenant, inherited pattern, and spiritual oppression that may be working against their lives and families.

Everything in life—family, business, academics, church, and personal destiny—has a foundation. A foundation may be strong or weak, sound or faulty. The condition of a foundation can affect the stability and progress of what is built upon it.

Many people experience repeated setbacks, disappointment, stagnation, and destructive family patterns. Some struggle with problems that appear to have continued from one generation to another.

Lamentations 5:7 speaks of the burden of the sins of previous generations. However, through Jesus Christ, believers can seek freedom from the consequences of sin, reject ungodly patterns, and establish a new foundation in righteousness.

Some of our ancestors may have entered into ungodly covenants, participated in idolatry, or made decisions that affected their descendants. Through repentance, faith in Christ, and fervent prayer, we can reject every evil dedication, ungodly covenant, and destructive pattern and surrender our lives and families to the lordship of Jesus Christ.

You do not have to continue in a destructive pattern simply because it existed before you were born. In Christ, you can begin a new chapter.

WHAT IS A FOUNDATION?

A foundation simply refers to:

1. The beginning of something.
2. The point of commencement.
3. The genesis or origin of a person's life or an undertaking.
4. The starting point upon which something is built.
5. The underlying structure that supports growth, stability, and progress.

Bible Verse — Matthew 7:24–25: Jesus compared the person who hears His words and obeys them to a wise man who built his house upon a rock. A strong spiritual foundation is established through obedience to God's Word.

CAUSES OF A BAD FOUNDATION

The following are spiritual and moral issues that may contribute to destructive family patterns or spiritual bondage. These are areas for prayer, repentance, and a renewed commitment to God.

1. Sin and persistent disobedience to God.
2. Unbroken ungodly covenants.
3. Idolatry and the worship of other gods.
4. Destructive family conflicts and harmful marital patterns.
5. Evil dedication and ungodly spiritual commitments.
6. Unresolved curses and harmful words spoken over a person or family.
7. Unlawful shedding of blood.
8. Circumstances surrounding conception that raise spiritual concerns for the individual.
9. Occultism and forbidden spiritual practices.
10. Witchcraft and the pursuit of occultic power.
11. Adultery and sexual immorality.
12. Rituals and sacrifices associated with idolatry or occult practices.
13. Harmful incisions and ritual markings.
14. Seeking spiritual power or guidance from sources contrary to God's Word.

Bible Verse — Ezekiel 18:20 (KJV): “The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son…”

This verse reminds us that each person is accountable before God. A person's background does not remove their opportunity to turn to God and walk in righteousness.

EFFECTS OF DESTRUCTIVE FOUNDATIONAL PATTERNS

People may experience the following difficulties and bring them before God in prayer:

1. Troubling or recurring dreams.
2. Repeated family struggles and destructive patterns.
3. Failure and disappointment.
4. Opposition that seems difficult to understand.
5. Repeated cycles of hardship.
6. Disfavor and rejection.
7. Persistent fear of spiritual attacks.
8. A sense of spiritual dryness or distance from God.
9. Lack of support and helpful relationships.
10. Failure at the edge of success.
11. Persistent financial hardship.
12. Delays and stagnation.
13. Unexplained hostility or conflict.
14. Marital and relationship problems.

These experiences can have many causes, including practical, emotional, relational, and spiritual factors. Prayer, wise counsel, and appropriate practical action can work together as a person seeks restoration.

HOW TO OVERCOME FOUNDATIONAL BATTLES

Foundational battles should be approached with faith in God, repentance, and a determination to break destructive patterns.

1. Repent and turn away from sin

Confess your own sins sincerely and ask God for mercy. Where family history is involved, acknowledge the wrongs of previous generations without assuming personal guilt for another person's actions.
