Introduction
Marriage is important to God.
From the beginning, God Himself established marriage. Genesis 2:18 reveals God's intention that man should not remain alone. Marriage was not designed by Satan; it was designed by God.
Because marriage is part of God's purpose, the enemy seeks to attack, delay, frustrate and destroy marriages.
Some people experience repeated disappointment in relationships. Others enter relationships that continually end in heartbreak. Some experience persistent marital delay, while others eventually marry but face battles that appear to repeat patterns seen in their families.
This is why the foundation must be examined.
Psalm 11:3 asks:
“If the foundations be destroyed, what can they do?”
A damaged foundation can affect what is built upon it. In the same way, believers should take foundational matters seriously while placing their ultimate confidence in Jesus Christ.
The Bible also teaches that marriage is a covenant relationship. Malachi 2:14 describes marriage as a covenant.
Therefore, if you are trusting God for marriage, preparing for marriage or already married and experiencing persistent battles, bring your marriage before the Lord in prayer.
The good news is that Jesus Christ is greater than every ancestral pattern, family history, evil covenant and spiritual battle.
2 Corinthians 5:17 says:
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature…”
Your family history does not have the final word over your destiny.
Jesus Christ does.
THE FOUNDATION OF YOUR MARRIAGE MATTERS
A foundation determines what is being built upon it.
If a building has a faulty foundation, problems may eventually appear throughout the structure.
Likewise, your spiritual foundation, character, choices, family background, relationships, faith and understanding of God's Word can affect how you approach marriage.
But there is an important truth:
A difficult background does not mean that a person is doomed to have a difficult marriage.
Christ can redeem, restore and establish what has been damaged.
Galatians 3:13 declares that Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law.
Therefore, we pray with faith—not fear.
WHY THE ENEMY ATTACKS MARRIAGES
The enemy hates anything that glorifies God.
A godly marriage can become a testimony of God's faithfulness, love, unity and covenant.
This is why believers should guard their marriages spiritually.
Ephesians 5:25 instructs husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the church.
Ephesians 5:33 speaks about love, respect and honour between husband and wife.
The enemy therefore seeks opportunities to introduce:
- Confusion.
- Unnecessary conflict.
- Wrong relationships.
- Marital delay.
- Bitterness.
- Unforgiveness.
- Sexual immorality.
- Pride.
- Ungodly counsel.
- Family interference.
- Financial pressure.
- Spiritual attacks.
- Repeated destructive patterns.
The answer is not fear.
The answer is to build upon Christ.
Psalm 127:1 says:
“Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it.”
ANCESTRAL AND FOUNDATIONAL BATTLES
The Bible recognizes that the actions of previous generations can have consequences for later generations.
Lamentations 5:7 says:
“Our fathers have sinned, and are not; and we have borne their iniquities.”
However, believers should never conclude that they are permanently condemned by their ancestry.
Through Christ, there is redemption.
Galatians 3:13 says:
“Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us…”
Therefore, these prayers are not prayers of hopelessness.
They are prayers of warfare, repentance, renunciation, restoration and faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ.
WHEN FOUNDATIONAL BATTLES ATTACK MARRIAGE
Some people may experience patterns such as:
- Persistent marital delay.
- Repeated broken relationships.
- Repeated disappointment.
- Attracting unsuitable partners.
- Repeated rejection.
- Jilting.
- Difficulty establishing a stable relationship.
- Persistent conflict in marriage.
- Repeated family interference.
- Destructive relationship patterns.
- Fear of marriage.
- Unhealthy emotional attachments.
- Sexual immorality affecting relationships.
- Difficulty trusting a spouse.
- Repeated separation.
These experiences should not automatically be interpreted as proof of witchcraft or ancestral activity. They can have spiritual, emotional, relational, financial or practical causes.
Nevertheless, believers can bring every troubling pattern before God and ask Him for wisdom, healing and deliverance.
DREAMS AND MARRIAGE
Some believers become concerned when they experience disturbing dreams involving:
- Sexual activity.
- Strange marriage ceremonies.
- Dirty wedding garments.
- Losing shoes.
- Shaving of hair.
- Strange people.
- Empty wedding venues.
- Marketplaces.
- Torn or dirty clothes.
- Repeated relationship-related dreams.
Dreams can have different causes and should not automatically be interpreted as spiritual attacks.
However, if a dream causes fear or spiritual concern, take it to God in prayer and test everything against Scripture.
1 John 4:1 says:
“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God.”
Do not allow fear of dreams to control your life.
2 Timothy 1:7 says:
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
HOW TO BUILD A GODLY MARRIAGE FOUNDATION
1. Build Your Life on Christ
Jesus must be the foundation.
Matthew 7:24–25 teaches about the person who hears Christ's words and puts them into practice.
2. Pray Before Entering a Relationship
Do not allow loneliness to push you into the wrong relationship.
Seek God's direction.
3. Examine Character
Do not look only at appearance, money, position or attraction.
Character matters.
4. Avoid Ungodly Relationships
Do not knowingly enter relationships that continually pull you away from God.
2 Corinthians 6:14 warns believers about being unequally yoked.
5. Deal With Your Own Past
Bring past wounds, bitterness, sexual sin, unforgiveness and unhealthy attachments before God.
6. Seek Godly Counsel
Proverbs 11:14 teaches the value of wise counsel.
7. Pray Together
A marriage that seeks God together becomes spiritually stronger.
8. Forgive
Do not allow bitterness to become a foundation of your marriage.
Ephesians 4:31–32 teaches believers to put away bitterness and practise forgiveness.
PREPARING YOUR HEART BEFORE YOU PRAY
A. Thank God
Thank God for your life, salvation, future marriage and everything He is doing.
B. Confess Your Sins
Confess your known and unknown sins and ask God for mercy.
Psalm 51:10 says:
“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”
C. Renounce Every Ungodly Covenant
If you have personally participated in occultism, idolatry, blood rituals or other practices contrary to God's Word, repent and renounce them.
D. Praise and Worship
Engage in quality praise and worship before beginning the warfare prayers.
E. Pray With Faith
Believe that God is able to rebuild what has been damaged.

- I recover every good thing stolen through the operations of darkness from my forefathers, my immediate family and myself, in the name of Jesus.
