Introduction

God is unlimited in power, wisdom, knowledge, and ability. He created the heavens and the earth, sustains all creation, and accomplishes His purposes according to His perfect will. No human being, earthly authority, or power of darkness can overthrow His sovereignty.

Yet the Bible warns us about attitudes and behaviours that hinder us from receiving God's promises, obeying His instructions, and walking in the fullness of what He has called us to do.

In Psalm 78, the children of Israel repeatedly witnessed God's mighty works, yet they complained, doubted Him, and rebelled against His instructions. Their unbelief and disobedience affected their relationship with God and their experience of His promises.

Limiting God does not mean that human beings can reduce His infinite power. Rather, it describes the ways our unbelief, disobedience, fear, rebellion, and refusal to trust Him can hinder our obedience and prevent us from benefiting from what He has provided.

Some people limit God through their words. Others do so through their actions, decisions, attitudes, or unwillingness to step out in faith. Some pray for a breakthrough but continue to make decisions governed by fear. Others ask God for direction but refuse to follow the instructions they have already received from His Word.

This teaching will help you identify ways you may be limiting your spiritual growth and respond through repentance, faith, obedience, and intense warfare prayer.

It is time to stop making your problems bigger than your God. Arise in faith, reject the spirit of unbelief, and begin to walk in obedience to the Word of God.

CONFESSION: PSALM 92:10

Psalm 92:10 (KJV)

“But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil.”

Make this your prayer: Father, renew my spiritual strength. Let my faith rise above fear, my obedience overcome rebellion, and my life become a vessel through which Your name is glorified. Anoint me afresh to fulfil Your purpose, in the name of Jesus.

WHO IS GOD?

God is far greater than the human mind can fully comprehend. The following truths help us understand why we must never allow fear, unbelief, or difficult circumstances to determine the limits of our faith.

1. He is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit

The Christian faith teaches that there is one God, eternally existing as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Matthew 28:19 teaches believers to baptize in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

2. He is the Great I AM

God revealed Himself to Moses as “I AM THAT I AM” in Exodus 3:14. He is self-existent and does not depend on anyone or anything for His existence.

3. He is the Alpha and the Omega

Revelation 22:13 declares that God is the beginning and the end. His purposes are not confined by human limitations.

4. He is the Most High

Psalm 97:9 (KJV) says:

“For thou, LORD, art high above all the earth: thou art exalted far above all gods.”

No earthly power is greater than God.

5. He is the Great Physician

Exodus 15:26 reveals God as the Lord who heals. We can seek His mercy and healing while also receiving appropriate medical care when necessary.

6. He is the Great Provider

Philippians 4:19 (KJV) says:

“But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”

God can provide through many means, including work, wise planning, opportunities, and the assistance of others.

7. He is the Great Shepherd

Psalm 23:1 (KJV) says:

“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.”

God guides, sustains, and comforts His people.

8. He is limitless in wisdom and power

Isaiah 55:8–9 reminds us that God's thoughts and ways are higher than ours. We must therefore trust His wisdom even when we do not understand His timing.

9. He is the Creator of all things

Genesis 1:1 declares that God created the heavens and the earth. The One who created all things is worthy of our faith and obedience.

10. He has good purposes for His people

Jeremiah 29:11 speaks of God's plans for His people in their historical context, offering hope and a future. We should trust His wisdom while seeking to understand His promises in their biblical context.

11. He desires our spiritual well-being

3 John 1:2 expresses a prayer for health and well-being alongside the prosperity of the soul.

12. All authority belongs to Christ

Matthew 28:18 (KJV) says:

“All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.”

13. God cannot lie

Numbers 23:19 (KJV) says:

“God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent.”

14. God does not change

Malachi 3:6 (KJV) says:

“For I am the LORD, I change not.”

15. Nothing is impossible with God

Luke 1:37 (KJV) declares that nothing is impossible with God. This gives us confidence to pray boldly while remaining submitted to His will, wisdom, and timing.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO LIMIT GOD?

Limiting God means allowing our attitudes, choices, and responses to hinder our relationship with Him and our obedience to His Word.

It may happen in the following ways:

1. Refusing to believe what God says about His character and promises.
2. Believing that we cannot obey God's instructions or fulfil the responsibilities He has given us.
3. Allowing fear to prevent us from seeking God's help.
4. Limiting what we are willing to ask God for in prayer.
5. Refusing to act on biblical instructions because of doubt or insecurity.
6. Questioning God's faithfulness whenever difficulties arise.
7. Trusting human opinions more than the truth of God's Word.
8. Relegating God to the background when making decisions about our lives, families, work, and future.

Psalm 78:41 describes Israel's repeated rebellion and testing of God. The passage warns us against allowing unbelief and disobedience to dominate our response to Him.

SHORT PRAYERS AGAINST LIMITING GOD

1. I refuse to become an obstacle to my own spiritual growth; Lord, expose and remove every attitude in me that resists Your will, in the name of Jesus.

2. O Lord, if I have become my own worst enemy through fear, pride, unbelief, or disobedience, have mercy on me and lead me back to the path of obedience, in the name of Jesus.

HOW DO WE LIMIT GOD?

1. Through unbelief

Matthew 13:58 records that Jesus did not do many mighty works in a particular place because of the people's unbelief.

Unbelief can keep us from trusting God's promises and responding to His instructions.

Prayer: Every spirit of unbelief resisting my faith, lose your influence over my life; Lord, help my unbelief and strengthen my confidence in Your Word, in the name of Jesus.

2. Through disobedience

The account of the young prophet in 1 Kings 13 warns about the serious consequences of disobeying God's instructions.

Prayer: Father, deliver me from selective obedience; give me the courage to follow Your Word even when it is difficult, in the name of Jesus.

3. Through fear

Fear can cause us to abandon opportunities, avoid responsibility, or refuse to obey God.

2 Timothy 1:7 reminds believers that God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.

4. Through laziness

Some people pray for progress but refuse to take the necessary steps toward it.

Proverbs 13:4 contrasts the desires of the sluggard with the diligence of the hardworking person.

5. Through spiritual immaturity

Galatians 4:1–2 uses the example of an heir who, while still a child, remains under guardians and stewards.

Spiritual growth requires learning, discipline, and maturity.

6. Through selfishness

Selfish ambition can cause us to pursue our desires while ignoring God's principles and the needs of others.

James 4:3 warns about asking with wrong motives.

7. Through walking by sight rather than faith

2 Corinthians 5:7 says:

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”

Faith does not mean ignoring facts or acting recklessly. It means trusting God while responding wisely to the circumstances before us.

8. Through doubt

James 1:6 encourages believers to ask in faith rather than being ruled by doubt.

9. Through ignoring God's warnings

God's instructions are intended to guide us. Ignoring wise warnings can lead to avoidable trouble.

10. Through prayerlessness

1 Thessalonians 5:17 says:

“Pray without ceasing.”

A prayerless life can weaken our spiritual discipline and awareness of our dependence on God.

11. Through trying to play God's role

We cannot control every outcome or force everything to happen according to our preferred timetable. We must do what is ours to do and entrust what we cannot control to God.

12. Through living according to the flesh

Galatians 5:16 teaches believers to walk in the Spirit rather than fulfil the desires of the flesh.

WHY DO WE LIMIT GOD?

1. Ignorance

Hosea 4:6 warns about the destructive consequences of a lack of knowledge.

We must study Scripture and grow in understanding.

2. Foolish decisions

When we act without wisdom, seek no counsel, or ignore the consequences of our actions, we can create unnecessary obstacles.

Proverbs 4:7 teaches the importance of wisdom and understanding.

3. Rebellion and disobedience

Rebellion causes us to resist the guidance God has provided through His Word.

4. Fear

Fear can make a problem appear greater than God's ability to sustain us through it.

5. Pride

Pride makes us depend on our own understanding and resist correction.

Proverbs 16:18 warns that pride goes before destruction.

6. The grasshopper mentality

In Numbers 13:33, the spies described themselves as grasshoppers in comparison with the inhabitants of the land.

Their report reveals how fear and a sense of inferiority can distort our view of a challenge.

7. Accepting standards below God's principles

We must not settle for a life of dishonesty, disobedience, or spiritual compromise when God calls us to righteousness.

8. Relying only on our own strength

Proverbs 3:5–6 instructs us to trust in the Lord rather than lean entirely on our own understanding.

9. Pleasing people rather than God

In 1 Samuel 13:7–14, Saul's disobedience exposed the danger of acting under pressure instead of following God's instruction.

Galatians 1:10 reminds us to seek to please God rather than make human approval our highest priority.

CONSEQUENCES OF LIMITING GOD

The consequences of unbelief, pride, and disobedience can include:

1. Missed opportunities.
2. Spiritual stagnation.
3. Dissatisfaction and discouragement.
4. Damaged relationships.
5. Unnecessary conflict and trouble.
6. Failure to enjoy the peace that comes from trusting God.
7. Poor decisions caused by fear.
8. Delayed progress because of procrastination or refusal to obey.
9. Loss of trust through dishonesty or disobedience.
10. Spiritual discipline and correction.

The Bible gives examples of people who suffered consequences because of their responses to God.

• Pharaoh: His repeated refusal to obey God brought judgment upon Egypt — Exodus 7–12.
• Zacharias: His initial doubt about the angel's message resulted in a temporary inability to speak — Luke 1:18–20.
• Nebuchadnezzar: His pride brought humiliation until he acknowledged God's sovereignty — Daniel 4:28–37.
• Saul: His disobedience contributed to the rejection of his kingship — 1 Samuel 15.

These accounts are warnings to take God's Word seriously and to respond with humility and faith.

SYMPTOMS THAT YOU MAY BE LIMITING GOD

Examine your life prayerfully. These may indicate areas that need attention:

1. Making decisions mainly out of fear.
2. Believing that God cannot help you through difficult circumstances.
3. Depending exclusively on what you can see.
4. Waiting for every circumstance to become comfortable before taking a necessary step.
5. Magnifying the enemy or the problem while forgetting God's promises.
6. Refusing reasonable opportunities because you fear failure.
7. Placing more confidence in human beings than in God.
8. Trusting only what seems naturally possible.
9. Repeatedly making excuses for disobedience.
10. Praying for change while refusing to change harmful habits.
11. Allowing past failures to define your future.
12. Abandoning good plans at the first sign of difficulty.

These signs are not proof that God has abandoned you. They are invitations to examine your heart, renew your mind, and take practical steps toward faith and obedience.

THE WAY FORWARD: HOW TO STOP LIMITING GOD

1. Repent of sin and rebellion

Confess your sins honestly and turn away from them.

1 John 1:9 assures believers that God is faithful and just to forgive sins and cleanse from unrighteousness.

2. Watch your mouth

Reject words of hopelessness and reckless negativity. Speak truthfully, prayerfully, and in agreement with God's Word.

3. Remove impossibility from your thinking

Matthew 19:26 (KJV) says:

“With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.”

This does not mean that every personal desire will happen exactly as requested. It means that our limitations do not define God's power.

4. Guard your mind

Philippians 4:8 encourages believers to think about what is true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and worthy of praise.

5. Carry out regular spiritual check-ups

Ask yourself whether fear, pride, resentment, disobedience, or unbelief is influencing your decisions.

6. Make positive, Scripture-based confessions

Speak God's promises over your life without denying reality or pretending that challenges do not exist.

7. Pray and fast regularly

Prayer and fasting can help believers seek God with focus and humility. Practise fasting responsibly and consider your health needs.

8. Take practical steps of faith

Apply for the opportunity. Learn the skill. Seek wise counsel. Make the necessary call. Start the work. Faith should influence action.

9. Be willing to grow

Do not let past mistakes or a lack of experience convince you that you cannot learn and improve.

10. Trust God's timing

God's answers may not come at the time or in the form we expect. Continue to seek Him while acting faithfully in the responsibilities before you.
