INTRODUCTION

Some dreams happen once and are quickly forgotten.

Others seem to return repeatedly.

A person may dream of the same house again and again, repeatedly find themselves in the same disturbing place, experience recurring attacks, repeatedly dream of being chased, falling, trapped, naked, eating, fighting, drowning or failing, or wake up with the same feeling of fear and oppression.

When disturbing dreams keep repeating, they can become frightening and exhausting.

The person may begin to dread going to sleep.

However, recurring dreams should not automatically be interpreted as proof that a specific person is attacking you spiritually. Dreams can also be influenced by stress, anxiety, memories, experiences, medications, sleep disturbances and other natural factors.

Therefore, do not accuse anyone simply because of a dream.

At the same time, believers can bring troubling dreams before God in prayer and ask Him for protection, peace, wisdom and freedom from fear.

The purpose of these prayers is not to make you live in fear of dreams.

The purpose is to put your night, your mind, your sleep and your confidence in God.

If a particular disturbing dream keeps repeating, pray against the fear and disturbance surrounding it, ask God for wisdom concerning anything in your waking life that may be contributing to it, and continue trusting Him.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN WHEN AN EVIL DREAM KEEPS REPEATING?

A recurring evil dream is a disturbing dream or nightmare that returns repeatedly or follows a similar pattern.

It may involve:

  • The same frightening location
  • The same type of attack
  • Repeated pursuit or chasing
  • Repeated falling
  • Repeated failure
  • Repeated death-related imagery
  • Repeated conflict
  • Repeated feelings of imprisonment
  • Repeated disturbing encounters
  • Waking with intense fear
  • Similar nightmares occurring over a period of time

Not every recurring dream has a spiritual meaning.

Some recurring dreams can arise from unresolved emotions, stress, trauma, anxiety, sleep patterns or things repeatedly occupying the mind.

Whatever the cause, you do not have to live in fear.

You can pray, seek God's peace, examine your life wisely and take appropriate practical steps.

WHY REPEATED EVIL DREAMS SHOULD NOT CONTROL YOU

God has not given you the spirit of fear

Fear should not become the ruler of your nights.

Your sleep belongs to God

You can commit your sleeping hours into God's hands.

Jesus gives peace

You do not have to wake up every morning terrified about what you dreamed.

Prayer can restore confidence

Bringing your fears before God can help you regain spiritual and emotional stability.

Wisdom is necessary

Do not build accusations, major decisions or conclusions about other people solely on the basis of dreams.

BIBLICAL EXAMPLES INVOLVING DREAMS

Joseph

God used dreams to communicate important things to Joseph.

But Joseph did not simply react emotionally to dreams. God gave him understanding and wisdom concerning their meaning.

Pharaoh

Pharaoh experienced repeated dreams that carried an important message concerning Egypt's future.

Joseph explained the dream through the wisdom God gave him.

Nebuchadnezzar

Nebuchadnezzar experienced troubling dreams and sought an interpretation.

Daniel acknowledged that God reveals mysteries.

Joseph, the husband of Mary

God used dreams to warn and direct Joseph concerning Jesus.

These examples demonstrate that dreams appear in Scripture, but they also demonstrate the importance of God-given wisdom and interpretation rather than assuming that every dream has the same meaning.

WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT NIGHTTIME PROTECTION

Psalm 4:8

God can give peaceful sleep.

Psalm 91

The believer can trust God's protection day and night.

Proverbs 3:24

God's Word speaks of lying down without fear and having sweet sleep.

Psalm 121:4

God does not slumber or sleep.

2 Timothy 1:7

Fear does not come from God.

Isaiah 54:17

No weapon formed against God's people shall prosper.

Psalm 23:4

Even in dark valleys, God's presence brings comfort.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU KEEP HAVING THE SAME DISTURBING DREAM

Pray before sleeping

Commit your mind, body and sleep into God's hands.

Avoid feeding fear

Do not spend the entire day expecting another nightmare.

Examine what may be affecting your sleep

Stress, anxiety, frightening media, irregular sleep and other factors can influence dreams.

Keep a simple dream record if necessary

Recording recurring patterns can help you notice whether the dreams correspond with particular circumstances.

Do not accuse people

A dream is not evidence that a particular person has attacked you.

Seek help when needed

If recurring nightmares are seriously disturbing your sleep or daily life, consider speaking with a qualified health professional or counsellor.

Prayer and appropriate practical help can work together.

PREPARE YOUR HEART BEFORE PRAYING

Do not approach these prayers in panic.

Approach God in faith.

You are not praying because you believe the dream has greater power than God.

You are praying because God is greater than every fear, every disturbing experience and every circumstance surrounding your life.

Before sleeping, surrender your mind to God.

Forgive people who have offended you.

Release anxiety.

Read Scripture.

Pray calmly.

Then sleep in confidence.
