Introduction

There are seasons when opportunities seem to keep appearing, yet somehow they repeatedly slip away.

A person may discover an opportunity too late, make the wrong decision, hesitate when action is required, trust the wrong advice, overlook an important connection, fail to recognize a door, or become distracted until the opportunity passes.

Sometimes opportunities are missed because of fear, procrastination, lack of preparation, poor judgment or circumstances beyond our control.

For a Christian, however, there is another important question: Am I recognizing what God is putting before me?

The Bible repeatedly teaches the importance of wisdom, discernment, diligence, preparation and recognizing the proper time.

This article is therefore not about assuming that every missed opportunity is caused by spiritual opposition. Rather, these prayers ask God to remove every hindrance—spiritual, emotional, mental, practical or circumstantial—that repeatedly causes legitimate opportunities to be missed.

May God give you eyes to see, ears to hear, wisdom to understand and courage to act when the right door opens.

WHAT ARE REPEATED MISSED OPPORTUNITIES?

Repeated missed opportunities occur when potentially beneficial opportunities repeatedly pass without being recognized, accepted, pursued or properly used.

They may involve:

• Employment
• Business
• Education
• Relationships
• Ministry
• Finances
• Career advancement
• Travel or relocation
• Personal development
• Important connections
• Creative ideas
• Investments
• Family opportunities
• Opportunities to serve God

Sometimes the problem is not the absence of opportunities. The problem may be failure to recognize or properly respond to them.

WHY DO PEOPLE MISS OPPORTUNITIES?

Repeated missed opportunities can result from:

• Fear of failure
• Procrastination
• Indecision
• Lack of preparation
• Poor timing
• Wrong counsel
• Distraction
• Lack of confidence
• Carelessness
• Overthinking
• Ignoring wise warnings

Spiritually, we can also pray against every genuine form of opposition that seeks to frustrate legitimate opportunities.

But prayer should go together with wisdom and responsible action.

BIBLICAL EXAMPLES OF OPPORTUNITY

1. Esther Recognized Her Opportunity

Esther was positioned in the palace at a critical moment.

Mordecai reminded her that her position could be connected to God's purpose.

Esther 4:14 says:

“And who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”

Esther recognized the moment and acted courageously.

2. David Recognized His Opportunity

When David encountered Goliath, he recognized an opportunity to stand for God's name while others were afraid.

He did not allow the fear of others to determine his response.

3. Bartimaeus Seized His Opportunity

When Bartimaeus heard that Jesus was passing by, he cried out for mercy.

He refused to remain silent.

He recognized that the moment before him was important.

4. The Five Wise Virgins Prepared in Advance

The wise virgins were prepared when the bridegroom arrived.

Their preparation positioned them to enter.

Matthew 25:10 records that those who were ready went in.

5. Nehemiah Acted on an Opportunity

When Nehemiah received an opportunity to speak to the king about Jerusalem, he prayed and then responded wisely.

His preparation and courage helped him move toward the assignment God had placed before him.

SESSION ONE: LORD, OPEN MY EYES TO OPPORTUNITIES

1. Father, open my spiritual and natural eyes to recognize every legitimate opportunity You bring into my life, in the name of Jesus.

Fear can make a person reject opportunities before they have properly evaluated them.
