Introduction
Sometimes you can be moving steadily toward something good when an unexpected obstacle suddenly appears.
A promising opportunity may encounter an unexpected requirement.
A business plan may face an unforeseen problem.
A financial breakthrough may be interrupted by an unexpected expense.
An admission process may suddenly become complicated.
A journey may encounter an obstacle.
A project may face resistance just when it is approaching completion.
A door may appear open, yet something suddenly stands in the way.
These experiences can be frustrating, especially when they happen repeatedly.
The Bible, however, gives us confidence that obstacles do not have the final word. God can make a way where there appears to be no way, give wisdom for difficult circumstances, remove barriers and redirect His children when necessary.
Not every obstacle is necessarily a spiritual attack. Some obstacles come from ordinary circumstances, human decisions, inadequate preparation, financial limitations, changing conditions or mistakes.
Therefore, these prayers should be combined with wisdom, preparation and appropriate practical action.
Where an obstacle is spiritual opposition, ask God to defeat it. Where the obstacle requires wisdom, ask God to show you what to do. And where God is redirecting you, ask Him to make His direction clear.
WHAT ARE UNEXPECTED OBSTACLES BEFORE BREAKTHROUGH?
Unexpected obstacles are difficulties that suddenly arise while a person is pursuing a legitimate goal, opportunity or breakthrough.
They may include:
- Unexpected financial problems
- Delays in documentation
- Sudden changes in plans
- Unforeseen expenses
- Administrative barriers
- Opposition from people
- Communication problems
- Failed arrangements
- Unexpected responsibilities
- Fear and confusion
- Lack of preparation
- Closed doors
- Repeated complications
- Unforeseen setbacks
Some obstacles are temporary.
Some require a change of strategy.
Some reveal weaknesses that need to be corrected.
And some doors may close because God is directing us toward something different.
The purpose of prayer is not merely to demand that every obstacle disappear, but to ask God for victory, wisdom, discernment, favor and a clear path forward.
BIBLICAL EXAMPLES OF OVERCOMING OBSTACLES
1. Moses and the Red Sea
Israel appeared trapped between the Red Sea and Pharaoh's army.
What looked like an impossible barrier became an opportunity for God to demonstrate His power.
Exodus 14:14 says:
“The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.”
2. Nehemiah and the Rebuilding of Jerusalem
Nehemiah encountered opposition, intimidation, mockery and attempts to stop the rebuilding of Jerusalem.
Yet the work continued.
Nehemiah 6:15 says:
“So the wall was finished…”
The obstacle did not have the final word.
3. Joshua at Jericho
Jericho stood between Israel and the territory God had promised them.
The walls appeared impossible to overcome through ordinary human strength.
God gave them specific instructions, and the barrier fell.
4. David and Goliath
Goliath appeared to be an enormous obstacle standing between Israel and victory.
David approached the obstacle with faith in God rather than fear.
5. Paul and Repeated Opposition
Paul encountered imprisonment, opposition, persecution, shipwreck and other difficulties while carrying out his ministry.
Yet these obstacles did not erase God's purpose for his life.
