50 Powerful Prayers for Healing From Grief and Loss With Bible Verses
Key Scripture
Psalm 34:18:
“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
Introduction
Grief is one of the deepest forms of emotional pain a person can experience.
The loss of a loved one, the death of a parent, spouse, child, relative, or friend can leave a painful emptiness that words cannot easily describe.
But grief is not limited to bereavement.
People can also grieve after the loss of a marriage, friendship, pregnancy, career, business, home, opportunity, financial stability, or a dream they deeply hoped would come true.
Sometimes the hardest part is not only what was lost but learning how to live with the empty space left behind.
God sees that pain.
Psalm 147:3:
“He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.”
God does not ask you to pretend that you are not hurting. You can bring your tears, questions, memories, and pain before Him.
These prayers are for anyone walking through a season of grief, bereavement, heartbreak, disappointment, or significant loss.
Healing from grief does not mean forgetting the person or pretending the loss did not matter. It means allowing God to bring comfort, strength, peace, and hope as you gradually learn to move forward.
Biblical Examples of People Who Experienced Grief and Loss
1. Jesus Wept at the Death of Lazarus
One of the most powerful examples of grief in Scripture is found when Jesus encountered the family of Lazarus.
John 11:35:
“Jesus wept.”
Jesus knew that Lazarus would be raised, yet He still wept with those who were mourning.
This shows us that tears are not a sign of weak faith.
God understands human grief.
2. David Grieved Deeply
David experienced the death of people he loved and went through seasons of intense sorrow.
Psalm 6:6:
“I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears.”
David did not hide his emotions from God. He brought his pain directly to Him.
3. Job Experienced Great Loss
Job suffered devastating losses in a short period of time.
Job 1:20:
“Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped.”
Job mourned deeply, yet continued to turn toward God.
4. Hannah Experienced Deep Emotional Pain
Hannah carried a painful burden for years and poured out her heart before God.
1 Samuel 1:10:
“And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and wept sore.”
God saw her tears and heard her prayer.
What the Bible Says About Grief
The Bible does not tell believers that they should never cry.
There is:
“A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance.” — Ecclesiastes 3:4
Grief is part of living in a broken world.
But grief does not have to become permanent hopelessness.
The Bible gives us a promise:
Psalm 30:5:
“Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”
This does not mean every loss disappears quickly. It means sorrow does not have to have the final word.
God can gradually bring peace into places where pain once dominated.
When You Are Grieving a Loved One
If you have lost someone you deeply loved, give yourself permission to grieve.
Remember the good moments.
Cry when you need to cry.
Talk to trusted people.
Pray honestly.
Do not isolate yourself unnecessarily.
And when grief becomes overwhelming or interferes significantly with daily life, consider seeking support from a qualified counselor, grief professional, pastor, or other trusted support person.
God can use people as part of the healing process.
2 Corinthians 1:3-4:
“Blessed be God... the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation.”
When the Loss Is Not a Death
Sometimes people experience grief even though nobody has died.
You may be grieving:
- The end of a marriage
- A broken friendship
- A lost pregnancy
- A failed business
- Loss of employment
- Financial loss
- A missed opportunity
- A destroyed dream
- A change in family circumstances
- Loss of your former way of life
Your pain is still real.
Bring it before God.
1 Peter 5:7:
“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”
Powerful Bible Verses for Grief and Loss

Preparing Your Heart Before You Pray
You do not have to find perfect words before you pray.
If all you can say is, “Lord, help me,” that is still a prayer.
Romans 8:26:
“For we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us.”
Tell God exactly how you feel.
Tell Him what you miss.
Tell Him what you fear.
Tell Him what you do not understand.
Then ask Him to carry what you cannot carry by yourself.

My grief does not mean that God has forgotten me.
The Lord is healing my broken heart.
I am allowed to mourn.
I am also allowed to hope again.
I will not allow sorrow to destroy my future.
The Lord will give me strength for each day.
The Lord will surround me with people who will encourage and support me.
My future is still in God's hands.
Psalm 30:5:
“Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”
I will trust God one day at a time.

Prophetic Declaration
I declare over your life:
May the God of all comfort strengthen you in your season of grief.
May the Lord meet you in the places where words cannot describe your pain.
May every broken place in your heart receive His healing touch.
May God give you strength for each new day.
May peace replace overwhelming anxiety.
May hope rise again where sorrow has become heavy.
May you receive the support, compassion, and encouragement you need.
May God give you grace to remember without being destroyed by painful memories.
May He lead you gently into a new season of purpose.
And may the day come when you can look back and say:
“The Lord carried me through.”
Psalm 147:3:
“He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.”
In Jesus' mighty name.
Closing Prayer
Father, I pray for everyone carrying the pain of grief and loss.
You know the name of the person they miss. You know the memories they carry. You know the tears they have cried when nobody was watching.
Lord, comfort them.
Heal their broken hearts.
Give them strength for today and hope for tomorrow.
Where they feel alone, surround them with Your presence and with people who genuinely care.
Where they feel guilty, give them peace.
Where they feel angry, bring healing.
Where they feel hopeless, let hope rise again.
Where they cannot see a future, guide them one step at a time.
Help them understand that healing does not mean forgetting. Give them grace to carry precious memories while continuing to live the life You have given them.
May Your peace guard their hearts and minds.
In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.
