INTRODUCTION
God has placed abilities, gifts, talents, opportunities and potential inside people for a purpose.
Some people can teach. Others can encourage, organize, create, lead, sing, write, build, solve problems, serve, communicate, counsel or demonstrate unusual skill in a particular area.
Some gifts are clearly spiritual gifts. Others are natural abilities and talents that can also be surrendered to God and used for His glory.
The tragedy is that many people never fully use what God has placed in them.
Some are afraid.
Some compare themselves with others.
Some believe their gift is too small.
Some bury their talent because they fear criticism or failure.
Others use their gifts entirely for personal recognition while neglecting the One who gave them.
Jesus' parable of the talents teaches us that what we receive should not be buried.
God does not expect you to have somebody else's gift.
He expects you to faithfully use what He has entrusted to you.
These prayers ask God for grace to recognize your gifts, develop them, overcome fear, resist comparison, remain humble and use your abilities for His glory and the good of others.
WHAT ARE GIFTS AND TALENTS?
A gift is an ability or capacity entrusted to a person by God.
The Bible speaks about spiritual gifts such as teaching, serving, giving, leadership, mercy and encouragement.
Talents can also refer to natural abilities, learned skills and areas of unusual capacity.
A person may have:
- A teaching gift
- A leadership gift
- A musical ability
- A writing ability
- A creative talent
- An organizing ability
- A gift for encouragement
- A gift for serving
- A business ability
- A problem-solving ability
- A communication ability
- A capacity to work with children
- A capacity to counsel and encourage others
The important question is not simply:
“What can I do?”
It is:
“How can I use what God has given me for His glory?”
WHY SOME PEOPLE FAIL TO USE THEIR GIFTS
Fear
Fear of failure or criticism can cause people to hide their abilities.
Comparison
Someone may believe their gift is worthless because another person's gift appears greater.
Low confidence
A person may fail to recognize the value of what God has placed in them.
Laziness
A gift can remain undeveloped when a person refuses to practice and improve.
Pride
A person can also misuse a gift when they seek praise for themselves rather than giving glory to God.
Wrong priorities
Gifts can become buried under distractions and unnecessary pursuits.
Fear of starting
Some people are waiting for perfect circumstances before they begin.
Lack of preparation
A gift often needs training, discipline and experience before it becomes fruitful.
BIBLICAL EXAMPLES OF GIFTS AND TALENTS
Bezalel
God gave Bezalel unusual skill and wisdom for the work of constructing the tabernacle.
David
David's musical ability became part of his service and ministry before God.
Joseph
Joseph's ability to interpret dreams and his administrative wisdom eventually positioned him to preserve many lives.
Daniel
Daniel demonstrated wisdom and understanding that distinguished him among others.
Timothy
Paul reminded Timothy not to neglect the spiritual gift given to him.
The Parable of the Talents
Jesus taught that servants should faithfully use what their master entrusted to them rather than burying it.
These examples show that God can use different kinds of abilities for His purposes.
