How to Pray When You Are Experiencing Unusual Spiritual Battles

How to Pray When You Are Experiencing Unusual Spiritual Battles

Key Scripture

Ephesians 6:12 (KJV)

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Psalm 34:19 (KJV)

Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.

Introduction

Have you ever experienced a season when problems seem to come from every direction?

Everything appears normal, and suddenly unusual difficulties begin to arise.

You pray about one matter, and another problem appears.

You experience strange fear, repeated setbacks, unusual opposition, persistent confusion, disturbing dreams, unexplained discouragement, or battles that seem completely out of proportion to the situation.

You may begin to ask:

“Why am I experiencing these unusual battles?”

“Why does everything suddenly seem difficult?”

“How should I pray when I don't understand what is happening?”

Unusual spiritual battles can be exhausting because they can affect your emotions, faith, relationships, finances, work, family, and spiritual life.

But you should not allow fear to control you.

The Bible says:

“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?” — Psalm 27:1

When you experience unusual battles, your response should be to draw closer to God, seek His wisdom, stand on His Word, and pray with faith.

Remember that not every unusual problem is necessarily spiritual. Some situations require practical action, medical or professional assistance, wise counsel, repentance, better decisions, or changes in circumstances.

Therefore, ask God for discernment, rather than assuming the cause.

God can show you what you need to know and give you the wisdom to respond correctly.

Biblical Examples

Job

Job experienced a series of devastating events that seemed to arrive one after another.

He lost his possessions, his children, and his health.

His suffering was so intense that he struggled to understand why it was happening.

Yet Job continued seeking God.

His story reminds us that a person can experience intense trials without those trials becoming the final chapter.

God eventually restored Job.

Job 42:10

David

David experienced seasons of intense persecution.

Saul pursued him, enemies surrounded him, and David sometimes felt completely overwhelmed.

Yet David repeatedly ran to God for protection.

He declared:

“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.” — Psalm 23:1

David's answer to danger was not surrender.

He sought God.

Daniel

Daniel faced opposition because of his commitment to prayer.

His enemies created a situation intended to destroy him.

Daniel did not abandon his prayer life.

Daniel 6:10

God preserved him in the lions' den.

Paul and Silas

Paul and Silas were beaten and imprisoned while doing the work of God.

Instead of allowing their circumstances to silence them, they prayed and sang praises at midnight.

Acts 16:25

God intervened dramatically.

Their situation changed because they continued trusting Him.

What the Bible Says

1. Spiritual Battles Are Real

Ephesians 6:12 teaches that believers face spiritual opposition.

This means we should not treat every battle as merely physical or emotional.

At the same time, we must exercise discernment and avoid blaming spiritual forces for every difficulty.

2. God Is Greater Than Every Opposition

1 John 4:4 says:

“Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”

Your confidence must be in God's power.

3. God Is Your Refuge

Psalm 46:1 says:

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

When unusual battles arise, run to God.

4. You Must Resist the Enemy

James 4:7 says:

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

Notice the order.

Submit to God first.

Then resist the enemy.

5. God Gives You Spiritual Weapons

2 Corinthians 10:4 says:

“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds.”

Your strength comes from God.

Practical Ways to Pray During Unusual Spiritual Battles

1. Begin With Worship

Do not begin your prayer by describing how powerful the problem is.

Begin by declaring how powerful God is.

Praise Him for who He is.

2. Ask God for Discernment

Pray:

“Father, show me what is happening and how You want me to respond.”

Do not allow fear to make you jump to conclusions.

3. Examine Your Heart

Ask God to search your heart.

If there is something you need to repent of or correct, respond honestly.

4. Cover Yourself in Prayer

Pray for God's protection over your:

  • Life
  • Family
  • Home
  • Work
  • Finances
  • Health
  • Calling
  • Future

5. Pray Against Every Evil Pattern

If you notice recurring problems, bring them specifically before God.

Pray against every pattern that is contrary to God's will.

6. Use Scripture in Prayer

Do not rely only on emotions.

Pray God's promises back to Him.

7. Refuse Fear

Fear can make a difficult situation appear even bigger.

Remember:

God is your refuge.

8. Make Necessary Practical Changes

If God reveals that a situation requires action, do not ignore it.

Prayer and wise action should work together.

9. Keep Praying

Do not abandon prayer because the answer has not appeared immediately.

Continue seeking God.

10. End Your Prayer With Thanksgiving

Thank God before you see the final result.

Thanksgiving demonstrates faith in God's ability to intervene.
