Introduction
The Bible strongly warns against familiar spirits, spiritism, divination and every attempt to seek supernatural guidance or power apart from God.
In deliverance and spiritual-warfare language, familiar spirits are commonly understood as demonic spirits associated with recurring patterns of spiritual oppression, deception, monitoring, temptation and bondage.
The Bible does not encourage believers to investigate or communicate with such spirits. Instead, believers are instructed to turn completely to God and resist the works of darkness.

WHAT ARE FAMILIAR SPIRITS?
The expression “familiar spirits” appears in several places in the King James Bible. Scripture associates them with occult practices, spiritism and forbidden attempts to obtain supernatural information.
For example:
“Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards.” — Leviticus 19:31
And:
“There shall not be found among you any one that... useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch.” — Deuteronomy 18:10
For Christian spiritual warfare, the important response is not to become fascinated with identifying spirits. The important response is to reject occult practices, submit to God, stand on His Word and seek freedom through Christ.

The Girl With the Spirit of Divination
In Acts 16:16–18, Paul encountered a girl associated with a spirit of divination. Paul commanded the spirit to leave her in the name of Jesus Christ.
This demonstrates that the authority of Christ is greater than spiritual oppression.

Josiah removed occult practices and those associated with familiar spirits from the land.

Jesus repeatedly demonstrated authority over evil spirits.
